My goal is to present to you the possibility and opportunity of being extraordinary basketball players. I will leave you with the access to creating the possibility beyond being good or even great players.
Being extraordinary is a function of who you are and who you are being in the moment. Being extraordinary is available to each and every person. Extraordinary people start out being ordinary people. At some point in their life they had a purpose that touched, moved and inspired them and gave them the experience of joy, power and self-expression. At that point they invented a possibility that was huge; bigger than they themselves and then they lived consistent with that.
If being extraordinary is available to everyone what limits us from being extraordinary? What constraints us from having the experience of wonder and awe of being alive and being passionate about life?
What do you need to give up to be extraordinary. May be you need to give up assessments, concerns and comparisons that keep you from being in the present.
Assignment #1
1. Determine and be present to what touched, moved and inspired you to play
basketball.
2. Discover what you need to give up to create the experience of being
extraordinary.
Practice giving up your assessments, concerns and comparisons that keep you from
being fully in the present. For example:
a) Assessments: "I only got to play for 2 minutes in every quarter so I think by
Coach's assessment I am not very good.
b) Concerns: "I am not tall enough; fast enough; have not played long enough"
c) Comparisons: "If only I was as tall as #00 I would be extraordinary.
3. Practice the practices of being Extraordinary:
a) Integrity: Give your word, then keep your word all the time.
b) Being Racket-free: Give up being right.
c) Being Peaceful: Give up your experience that something is wrong.
d) Being Powerful: Communicate free of force.
e) Being Courageous: Giving up fear as a justification not to act.
My desire for you is that you will walk onto the court every time experiencing a profound and enduring feeling of contentment, capability and centeredness. That you will have a rich sense of well-being that comes from knowing you can deal productively and creatively with all that the game offers: both the good and the bad.
That you will walk with a spring in your step from knowing your internal self and responding to your team's needs rather than the demands of your opponents. It is through this that you will find a deep sense of engagement: Living in the moment and enjoying the game of basketball.
My goal is to leave you more self-expressed and Extraordinary that when I found you.
